How to Prevent Sports Injuries and Concussions

As summer time promises us long days of good weather and fun activities, many of us are warming up for the coming sports season. Getting out there and staying active is a wonderful way to stay healthy and enjoy the better weather; but those summer days may not be as fun if you end up watching from the sidelines because of a bad injury. While eliminating all chance of injury is impossible, there are plenty of ways you can Prevent Sports Injuries or a concussion when you are playing your favorite games.

Take Care of Your Body

Ninety percent of all professional athletes get chiropractic care regularly to prevent injuries, as well as speed the healing of the injuries that do occur. Regular chiropractic visits can help keep your body working at its optimal potential, making injury less likely to occur.

Wear Protective Gear

Even if that quick softball game with your friends doesn’t officially need a helmet, wearing one is still a good idea. Many concussions are caused by accidents in contact sports when the person wasn’t wearing appropriate safety gear. This isn’t limited to helmets. Other safety gear such as shin guards and mouth guards can help keep your body safe from harm while playing the sports you love.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Warming up through a brief jog or even a brisk walk is an important part of reducing the risk of injury. It is best to wait until after you have walked or jogged a few minutes before stretching, so that your muscles have a chance to warm up. Stretching before you have walked or jogged can lead to torn muscles.

After the game, cooling down is just as beneficial for your muscles and ligaments, which may well be sore and ready for a cool down after strenuous exercise. Even if you feel tired, a cool down will help your body transition to rest and aid in preventing muscle stiffness after the game.

Train for the Sport

Some of the worst injuries can happen when you first get back into your sport after a long layoff. Your body is not prepared for the sudden change in activity level, and may not be strong enough in the right areas. Strong muscles in the neck and shoulders can actually help protect your brain from concussion, and knees supported by strongly developed muscles are also less likely to sprain or injure in other ways.

Exercises geared toward your specific sport can be a great way to get into the sports season, and can help reduce injury a great deal.

Got a Small Injury? Heal first.

When you are passionate about a sport, it is tempting to get back on the field as soon as possible after an injury has occurred. Doing so can actually cause an injury to get a lot worse. If you do happen to get injured, rest the injury until it is completely healed before getting back in the game. Your team mates might be sad you’re off the field for a while, but it is better than having to quit the game completely or miss an entire season.

Chiropractic care after an injury is a great way to help your body heal faster if you do get an injury. An adjustment will not only help your current injury heal better and faster, it will help you avoid getting secondary injuries caused by your body compensating for the injury.

Sports are a great way to have fun and stay healthy. As the new sports season approaches, make sure you stay healthy by following the tips above for an injury free sports season.
